Community Alert – Great Western Park (Southern Community Centre Area) |
||
|
We have received reports of people regularly smoking cannabis on the benches and within the shelter near the field by Southern Community Centre, Great Western Park.
Cannabis remains a Class B controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Possession of cannabis and the public use of cannabis may constitute criminal offences, and police have powers to take enforcement action where appropriate.
While some may view cannabis use as a minor issue, smoking cannabis in public spaces can have a significant impact on the wider community. The smell can travel considerable distances, particularly during periods of hot weather when residents have windows and doors open. This can affect families enjoying their gardens, children playing outdoors, and residents who simply wish to enjoy their homes without being subjected to drug-related activity. Repeated incidents can also contribute to concerns around anti-social behaviour and make public spaces feel less welcoming for others.
If you witness cannabis being smoked in this location, please report it. Information such as: If the activity is happening at the time and requires police attention, please report it via 101. If a crime is in progress and there is an immediate risk to public safety, call 999. Information can also be passed anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Your local Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to patrol the area and take positive action where offences are identified. However, it is important to stress that we cannot be everywhere at once. The information provided by residents is often what enables us to identify patterns, direct patrols effectively, and take action against those responsible.
Please continue to report incidents and share any information you have. Community intelligence is vital in helping us address these concerns and keep Great Western Park a safe and pleasant place for everyone.
